Mission Endure 40: Order Your Garden Seeds Now!
We have already begun planning out our garden for 2021. We had a large garden last year and we want to increase the size of it this year. We save some seeds from our garden last year to plant this year, but we also want a better variety and larger volume of fruits and vegetables. So we ordered seeds to go along with what we had. We used three great resources this year.
MIGardener is a source we have used for many years. I followed the MIGarderner YouTube Page for many years before I ordered any seeds from them. MIGardener is a small business in Michigan that offers seeds and fertilizer for sale on their website. The YouTube channel offers lots of gardening advice. The seeds I have ordered from MIGardener in the past are very high quality and inexpensive. Most of the seed packets are $.99 each for 25 seeds. The problem with MIGardener is that they are so small them run out of seeds quickly. As I went out to there E-Commerce page today I noticed they were on a waiting list for many of their seeds.
Johnny’s Select Seeds is a long-time favorite among gardeners. They have a huge selection and you can purchase seeds in bulk if you have a large operation going. I have seen numerous commercial growers using Johnny’s seeds. They seem to have a large amount of product and their customer service is good.
Baker Creek is a company we started using this year. They are from central Missouri, only a couple of hours from home, and offer lots of heirloom seeds that should grow well in our area. This year we decided we wanted to grow more heirloom seeds (particularly tomatoes, peppers, and lettuce), so we ordered from them. They shipped the seeds and we were able to get them in two days. They had a waiting list for a few of the seed varieties we wanted, but they had most of what we wanted to order and they were very fast.
One thing I noticed is that seed warehouses are running out of seeds quickly this year. I think a lot of people are scared about where the economy is going and they want to grow as much of their own food as possible. They want to live a more sustainable lifestyle and that includes gardening. Both Johnny’s and Baker Creek have decided that in order to provide the best selection of seeds at the time everyone wants them that they only let customers order seeds on certain days. Johnny’s had you wait until after a date in January before you could order any seeds. Baker Creek only allowed customers to order seeds on certain days of the week. Very strange, but I guess they don’t want to have a run on their seeds that leave customers without anything to show for it. I think it shows that we are all thinking the same thing and it pays to order early and be at the front of the line when seeds are ready.
Good luck with your gardens. Hopefully these resources help.
